About the Hunt:
The Secrets of SoMa Treasure Hunt is a game of urban exploration and discovery played on the colorful streets of San Francisco's historic South of Market neighborhood. Hundreds of sleuths-for-a-day will solve clues created by local private eye (and Chinese New Year Treasure Hunt creator) Jayson Wechter.

Treasure hunters will seek out obscure landmarks, forgotten architectural delights, secret views and vestiges of San Francisco's colorful past (and present) in an area that was home to Chinese fishing villages, silver mining millionaires, bohemian freight-hoppers and drag-racers along the information super-highway. They'll discover some of the rich history and cultural fabric of this diverse and exotic neighborhood as they visit sites few tourists, and many residents, never even notice.

The hunt is a fun and challenging teambuilding exercise, requiring collaborative problem solving and creative thinking. It's a great experience to share with friends or co-workers, and an excellent social ice-breaker that helps form social bonds. You can come with an organized team, or link up with like-minded players at the hunt.

The Secrets of SoMa Treasure Hunt is an opportunity to see San Francisco's historic and artistic South of Market neighborhood with a new found sense of wonder and inquisitiveness, to notice the hidden treasures most people commonly overlook in their destination-focused travels. It's a chance to re-configure the urban landscape by seeing it afresh, by noticing the forgotten landmarks, obscure byways and anonymous works of art, and the vestiges of the area's rich history which give San Francisco its unique character.

Proceeds benefit Hamilton Family Center, San Francisco's largest provder of housing and support services for homeless families.

Treasure hunting teams have four hours to solve sixteen clues while travelling on foot around a one-square mile area. Familiarity with San Francisco geography is useful, but is not required. Many clues relate to general knowledge, current events, science, the arts and popular culture. Each clue leads to a specific site in the playing area, where teams search for a secret item which proves they correctly solved that clue. Teams solving the most clues in the shortest time each receive prizes, and earn the right to gloat.

There are two difficulty levels: Regular and Master's, and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams in each division. Players can come with an organized team of four to eight people, or be matched up with like-minded players at the hunt: it's a great way to meet people.
